The increase in reported bedbug infestations has given new meaning to the phrase “domestic terrorism.”
Although bed bugs don’t carry diseases harmful to humans, there are two health concerns involving the increase in infestations of bed bugs globally.
The first is treating the rashes that come with bed bug attacks.
The other concern is mental health. It’s hard going to bed at night worrying about whether your backside is dinner for a parasite. Just thinking about it makes people squirm. Disturbed sleep patterns invite other health problems.
The first problem is easily treated. There are many creams and ointments available that will sooth the rash. It’s important to wash the rash with anti-bacteria soap, and avoid scratching, which only makes the irritation worse. Some people trim their fingernails so that they don’t automatically scratch while in bed asleep.
Getting rid of the pests themselves is a much more time consuming problem. The little blood-sucking parasites will live anywhere the corner of a credit card can fit.
Equiped with a flashlight and a vacuum cleaner you can seek out and destroy the elusive bugs. Completely vacuum box springs, mattresses, dresser drawers, couches, and under the edges of carpets and rugs. Vacuum behind headboards, baseboards, wall hangings, and light switch and electrical socket wall plates. Search for cracks in plaster and around plumbing fixtures.
In addition to finding bugs hiding or scurrying, look for the tiny brown specks of their fecal droppings, their tiny whitish eggs, and drops of blood (yours).
If you are still sure you have a bedbug infestation, but cannot find where they’re coming from, you might consider calling for a bedbug dog. Dogs who are trained to find explosives, narcotics, or mold are easily trained to sniff out the sick-sweet smelling Cimex Lectularius, as the common bedbug is known by its scientific name.
If bedbugs are discovered, and you can’t eliminate them yourself, it’s best to call a commercial exterminator. There are many different measures you can take, like encasing your mattress and box springs in vinyl, but for thorough elimination one should hire a professional.
